We thoroughly enjoyed using the VR headsets across YR2-6. They were incredibly helpful during a recent Y2 when the children had to describe rivers. Many of our children had no first-hand experience of rivers therefore struggled to describe them. However, with the aid of the VR headsets the children could see, and hear, rivers which made it easier for them to write and resulted in greater outcomes. Moreover, many history topics require the children to learn about ancient civilisations. Having the headsets meant that the children could experience a snippet of what life was like during these periods.

Firstly, the children absolutely loved using the VR headsets that we loaned from your STEM equipment loan pool – it added some excitement to their learning as most of them had not had an opportunity to use a VR headset before. In the first instance, we used the headsets to explore what a desert island looked like. We were reading Kensuke’s Kingdom in English and the children were going to write a story about a character who had been stranded on a desert island. This is a difficult task when you haven’t visited a desert island and we obviously could not provide that as a school trip. The VR headsets allowed us to give the children a visual experience of what a desert island might look like and it was useful that there were several images that the children could explore to aid their planning of their settings. Their writing was undoubtedly more realistic because of the use of the headsets and their use of them made the children more excited to begin writing.

At the same time, we were studying Ancient Greece in history. I decided to use the VR headsets again to explore sites related to the topic, such as the acropolis. Whilst this was again an exciting part of our unit of work, the images provided for this topic, such as the acropolis, were an image of the modern- day view with tourists around. This was useful to give children an idea of what the site looks like, but it would have been even better if the headsets would have allowed us to be immersed into a scene from ancient times. Being able to loan STEM equipment from yourselves is invaluable. We are a small school with tight budgets and knowing that we can give pupils experiences such as immersive learning through the VR headsets without the cost implications is fantastic.

The Gold technicians that come into school become part of the team as they are all friendly and professional in an education setting. They have such a wide breadth of knowledge of the schools requirements, there is nothing that they cannot do to make sure that the school is running to the best of its capabilities. They also are amazing at suggesting what equipment may be beneficial to the school together with sourcing and pricing equipment. The network speed is amazing considering the amount of devices we have on the premises and if ever there is an issue, which is very rare, the team at head office are super-fast to solve.

We constantly look for unique and innovative way to assist teaching and learning with Edtech an example of this is our free STEM offering, understating the majority of small schools struggle to afford the basics, as part of our service we offer loan equipment, with free support and teacher training in partnership with our training providers. This includes Class VR, Sphero Bolt Class Set and Podcaster full studio with iPad.

They have been great and we have linked them to the curriculum in the following ways:

- Supporting our EYFS in experiencing different animals (classification) in their environments   (habitats)- Science 

- Supporting KS1 experience the environment and animals in Antarctica - Geography 

- Supporting Lower KS2 experience 3D sculptures for an intro for their Art unit and locations and landscapes in the Americas for their Geography unit.
